25 new COVID-19 deaths reported on eve of Labor Day weekend

As Labor Day approaches and Hidalgo County officials raise concerns concerns that people will celebrate the holiday weekend in large groups, Hidalgo County saw 25 more deaths related to COVID-19 and 270 more positive cases.

There are now 28,178 known COVID-19 cases in the county and 1,233 COVID-19 fatalities.

“While we’re experiencing a slower rate of death, infections and hospitalizations, the numbers we are reporting remain unacceptable,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said in a news release. “I believe that we must take every precaution necessary to protect ourselves from this virus. That includes avoiding the temptation to celebrate the final holiday of the summer with large groups of people.”

There are now 257 people being treated for the virus in area hospitals with 99 of them are in intensive care units.
