Hidalgo County’s COVID-19 death toll surpassed the 1,600 mark as another 23 souls perished from COVID-19 related complications Thursday while 209 new positive cases were reported, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said in a news release.
“I remain very concerned with the growing number of deaths from this virus, but I am told that many of the deaths that we are recording these days come from a backlog of cases with the state,” Judge Cortez said. “That’s not to minimize the tragedy of these deaths, but to explain that our numbers are actually improving. Still, my prayers are with the families of those who have died.”
The 23 additional deaths brings the total death count from this disease to 1,611 people. The total number of known positive cases stands at 31,371 with 2,160 of those cases marked as active. The number of people hospitalized from the disease dropped to 175 but the number of patients being treated in intensive care units went up to 73 from 62 patients a day before.
