La Joya ISD reverses course, will resume athletic season

After deciding last month not to participate in the fall 2020 athletic season, the La Joya school district announced in a Tuesday news release the district will participate in varsity fall sports such as cross-country, football, team tennis and volleyball next week.

“La Joya ISD Administration and School Board reassessed its participation in athletic activities and collectively decided to allow students to participate in extracurricular activities at the varsity level in the following sports: football, volleyball, cross-country, swimming, golf and all other sports commencing thereafter,” La Joya ISD stated in a news release that said the district will resume its participation in varsity extracurricular activities under the guidance of UIL next Monday.

Several other school districts began their athletic fall season on Monday when the original order by Hidalgo County Health Authority Dr. Ivan Melendez said schools can resume with in-person activities.

On Friday, Melendez issued new recommendations advising school districts to continue to delay in-person activities through October 25.

“The health, safety, and well-being of our employees, students and community remains the highest priority for La Joya ISD,” the district said in their release.
