Sharyland Pioneer High School on-campus instruction and activities suspended

Citing an abundance of caution, the Sharyland school district announced Sunday that all on-campus instruction and extracurricular activities would be suspended until further notice.

“Beginning Monday, October 26, 2020, remote learning will be in effect for all staff and students at Pioneer High School only,” the district said in a social media post published on Sunday. “Please ensure your child attends all classes remotely.”

The district didn’t provide further details, but on Thursday cancelled the football game between Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks and the McAllen Memorial Mustangs football team “due to COVID-19.”

The district’s COVID-19 dashboard, which tracks the amount of active COVID-19 cases in each campus, reported eight students and three staff members currently infected with COVID-19. The dashboard states there is on active case of the disease at SPHS.

The announcement was made the day before the district was set to reopen to the public. The district previously said they were expecting a total of 1,518 students throughout the district to return to campus, 249 of which were from SPHS.
