Hidalgo County reports 5 COVID-19 deaths

With the rest of the country seeing a spike in new COVID-19 cases, the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services reported 5 more deaths and 130 new positive cases as of last Friday, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said Monday.

Due to the county’s new method of reporting COVID-19 cases, weekend numbers won’t be reported until Tuesday.

Friday’s new numbers bring the total number of deaths in Hidalgo County from this disease to 1,924 and the total number of known positive cases to 35,100. 2,025 of those cases are active.

“There is a nationwide surge in new cases and that reminds us that we need to remain cautious and avoid crowds while wearing facial coverings in public,” Judge Cortez said in a statement. “I extend my prayers to the family and friends of the five additional people in our community who have died because of this virus.”

170 Hidalgo County residents remain in area hospitals with 70 of them in intensive care units with COVID-19 related complications.
