Amid 5 new COVID-19 deaths, Hidalgo County officials urge public to stay safe during Halloween

Thursday brought five more reported COVID-19 related deaths in Hidalgo County and 123 new known positive cases, the county announced Friday.

The new numbers bring the total amount of COVID-19 related deaths in Hidalgo County to 1,952, a grim milestone for the county on the start of the Halloween holiday.

“As we head into Halloween, Dia de los Muertos and Election Day, I ask everyone to play it safe: wear facial coverings and avoid large crowds,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said in a statement. “Take a moment to remember those who have died and, like me, send a prayer of condolence to their loved ones.”

The county also reported the total amount o f known positive COVID-19 cases in the county now stands at 35,785 with 2,398 of them marked as active.

179 people remain in area hospitals with 60 of them being treated in intensive care units with COVID-19 related complications.
