November 20 & 22

  • The next Valley Symphony Orchestra concert, “Melody and Rhythm,” features the VSO woodwinds and percussion. The premier can be found live on Facebook at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, and on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. there will be an encore broadcast on KRGV Channel 5. The concert features a tour of the sounds of the marimba, djembe, xylophone, and more as the VSO percussion section performs two selections with Alejandro Viñao’s Estudios de Frontera and Dave Hall’s Escape Velocity. Then, the VSO woodwind sextet performs Francis Poulenc’s Sextet for Woodwinds and Piano and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Quintet for Woodwinds and Piano, and other favorites. December 1

  • This date, at 5 p.m., is the deadline for Texas Folklife 2021 applications for apprenticeships with the Folk Arts Program. Texas Folklife’s apprenticeship program provides awards of up to $3,000 for artist mentors to offer intensive, one-on-one training in a specific traditional art form or cultural practice to dedicated apprentices for six to eight months. Mentors and apprentices should apply together and submit one application. December 5

  • The annual McAllen Holiday Parade will be broadcast television production with no spectators in attendance. The parade begins at 6 p.m. from Oval Park at the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Blvd. It can be watched live on TV and via streaming options including McAllen Cable Network Spectrum Cable 1300 for McAllen residents; on the McAllen 3-1-1 mobile app or over the air antenna channel KAZH-HP 57.1. Viewers may also watch the parade on Azteca Valle, CBS-4, Telemundo 40, Telexitos and Unimas. Parade organizers will keep all of the elements of the previous six presentations of the parade, including the colorful, animated and iconic illuminated floats and the giant character and specialty helium and cold-air balloons, including bands and celebrities presented in unique ways.

December 18 & 20

  • The next Valley Symphony Orchestra concert is a variation of the orchestra’s seasonal tribute, “A Touch of Frost.” The virtual performance features the VSO Holiday Brass and Harp. The premier can be found live on Facebook at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, and on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. there will be an encore broadcast on KRGV Channel 5.
