2020 ended with Hidalgo County seeing a total of 51,662 reported cases of COVID-19 with over 2,200 county residents losing their lives to the contagious disease.
On New Year’s Eve Thursday, the county reported 697 new cases of the disease and nine more deaths, bringing the total amount of COVID-19 fatalities to 2,201 since the virus first arrived to the county last March.
Of those total cases, 1,964 remain active.
The new deaths include six females from the cities of McAllen, Mission, Pharr, San Juan and an undisclosed location. Their ages ranged from their 50s to over the age of 70.
Three males from Donna, mission and an undisclosed location were also among the victims. Their ages ranged from their 60s to over the age of 70.
The county also reported 334 residents remain in area hospitals with complications related to the disease. 115 of those patients are being treated in intensive care units.
