The COVID-19 death toll in Hidalgo County climbed to 2,229 Wednesday as health officials reported 11 more deaths and 540 new reported cases of the disease.
The new cases contribute to a total 53,197 reported cases of COVID-19 in the county since the contagious disease was first reported to be in the county last March. Of those total cases, 1,745 remain active.
The new deaths include 10 males and one female from the cities of Alamo, Donna, Edinburg, Mercedes, Pharr, San Juan and Weslaco. Their ages ranged from their 40s to over the age of 70.
381 residents remain in area hospitals to be treated with COVID-19 related complications with 120 of them placed in intensive care units.
