The COVID-19 death toll increased by eight Thursday in Hidalgo County.
In a news release, county health officials announced eight county residents succumbed from complications related to the disease, bringing the total amount of COVID-19 related deaths in Hidalgo County to 2,237 as of Thursday.
The new deaths included five males and three women from the cities of Alamo, Donna, Edinburg, McAllen, Mission, Pharr and an undisclosed location. Their ages ranged from their 40s to over the age of 70.
The county also reported 645 new reported cases of the contagious COVID-19 disease, bringing the county total to 53,842. Of those cases, 1,896 remain active.
391 residents remain in area hospitals with COVID-19 related health complications with 120 of them being treated in intensive care units.
