DHR Health hosting mass COVID-19 vaccination drive; cases cross 55K mark

DHR Health will provide vaccinations for eligible residents of the Rio Grande Valley this Tuesday at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.

The announcement of the 6,500 doses of the Moderna Vaccine that will be administered came on the same day as the county reported the amount of reported COVID-19 cases in the county crossed another grim milestone.

On Monday, county health officials reported 538 new known cases of the contagious disease, 340 of which were confirmed COVID-19 cases. According to a news release, this brings the total amount of known reported COVID-19 cases in the county to 55,138.

Six COVID-19 related deaths were also reported in the county Monday, bringing the total amount of residents who’ve succumbed from the virus to 2,253.

393 COVID-19 afflicted county residents remain in area hospitals with 115 of them being placed in intensive care units.

The COVID-19 vaccine will be administered to the following residents:

o Frontline Healthcare Workers

o Residents of Long-term care facilities

o People aged 65 and older

o People 18 years and older with at least one chronic medical condition, including

§ Cancer

§ Chronic Kidney Disease

§ COPD

§ Heart Conditions

§ Organ Transplantation

§ Obesity

§ Type 2 Diabetes

§ Pregnancy

Mandatory check-in to receive the vaccine is set for Monday at 7 p.m. at the HEB Park at 1616 S. Raul Longoria Rd. in Edinburg. Overnight parking will be allowed according to a news release from DHR Health.

Traffic will then be moved to the Bert Ogden Arena on Tuesday morning and armbands will be given to the first 6,500 eligible recipients in line with a consent form that must be filled out prior to arrival and can be found here.

    Type 1 insulin dependent diabetics are being excluded from the list or chronic diseases ! Only type 2 diabetics and obese people are considered chronic disease Why ? Thats extremely discriminatory !!! i am type 1 diabetic..explain !!

    I am a diabetic who is at high risk of contracting covid19, my daughter works as a phlebotomist at DHR. I have to more kids ages 21, 26 that live with me who also have chronic asthma and need to be vaccinated please help. I heard immediate family members of DHR workers are eligible for the vaccine. please

    The ability to register keeps getting closed…can you please leave it available so we can register. This way when you have more vaccines you can continue calling the next person on the list…and so on.

    I would like to pre register my parents for the Covid Vaccine. My dad is diabetic and both of my parents are almost 70 years old. They have been trying to find a place but have been unable.
