Hidalgo County to hold first drive-thru community COVID-19 vaccine clinic

In an effort to continue ramping up their efforts to vaccinate the community against the COVID-19 virus, Hidalgo county announced Tuesday their first ever drive-thru community clinic.

The clinic, which is happening Thursday, Jan. 21 in Weslaco in conjunction with the city  and the Weslaco Independent School District, is the fifth community clinic overall in the county. The clinic targets those 65 and older as well as those 18 and older with certain medical conditions, according to a news release from the county.

Eligible residents will be required to pre-register for the vaccine beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Bobby Lackey Stadium, 784 N. Westgate Drive in Weslaco. To pre-register, eligible residents must drive through the stadium’s southern entrance on Panther Drive.

During the pre-registration process, eligible residents will be issued a wristband displaying a designated time for them to return to the stadium the following for their vaccinations. Since there is a limited number of vaccine doses available at this time, the clinic will provide wristbands on a first come, first serve basis for the doses available.

The county did not say how many dosages would be available Thursday.

“We are seeing a pent-up demand for the vaccine in Hidalgo County and that is a good thing,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez said in a statement. “But we must follow the state’s guidelines for vaccine distribution meaning that much of our population must remain patient before getting a vaccine.”

On Tuesday morning, the county announced they were having their fourth community COVID-19 vaccine clinic in La Joya on Wednesday. A few hours after making that announcement, county officials said the community clinic has reached capacity due to the people already waiting in line for their vaccine.

According to the news release, those attending Thursday’s clinic are advised to:

·         Bring ID and proof of medical condition (current medication, a prescription from their doctor)

·         Bring clearance letter from their physician

·         People are encouraged to bring water and snacks

·         There could be periods of waiting and sitting in your vehicle

·         Children 18 and under should not be in the clinic

·         Those seeking vaccines with mobility concerns may bring one person to help them

The pre-registration form can be found here.

Got there at 6:30 and the line was already 4 miles long. As an 84 year old with heart problems, COPD AND ON OXYGEN 24/7 I am unable to spend half a day waiting in line and then be told they ran out of vaccine. In Florida you register on line are given a llltime to appear at a drive in for your shot. I am sure Florida would cooperate with Texas and furnish their info to make sure the aged who are most vulnerable get taken care of first.
