EVENTS CALENDAR

January 22-29 – The McAllen ISD Police Department is collecting food to donate to families in need. They are accepting canned foods and other non-perishables. Items can be dropped off at the McAllen ISD police department, 2112 N. Main St., McAllen.  For more information, contact Officer Jerry Del Angel at 956-434-6494.

January 23 – Quinta Mazatlan, 600 Sunset Dr. in McAllen, will host “Begin to Birdwatch” at 10 a.m., to learn more about the colors, behaviors, and diversity of birds and how to use binoculars to practicing bird identification using the “5 Keys of Bird ID.”  The class is for adults and older youth. Admission is $5 per person.  Class size is limited; reserve a spot at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com.  All guests are asked to follow current Covid-19 safety guidelines while in the park.  For more information, call 956-681-3370.

February 1 – The next Manic Monday Mixer networking event, hosted by the RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Yard House, 2200 S. 10th St. in McAllen.  Business are invited to donate a door prize to promote their products. February 17 – This is the deadline for nominations for the 2021 Barbara Jordan Media Awards (BJMA). The awards spotlight journalists who portray people with disabilities through a positive, person-centered lens created or published in 2020.  Awards are presented in different categories: broadcast, photojournalism, print and college or high school student. Self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged in all categories. March 31 – This is the deadline for applications for the 2021 “Don’t mess with Texas Scholarship Contest.” This contest recognizes Texas high school seniors who are taking an active role in litter prevention in their school or community. The contest is open to any Texas high school senior currently attending public, private or home school and planning to attend an accredited college or university in the Fall 2021 semester. The contest will award a total of $9,000 in scholarships to three winners in May of 2021. To enter the contest, visit dontmesswithtexas.org. Applications must be received via online submission by 5 p.m.

April

April 10 – The RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presents the annual Noche En El Rancho Gala at La Estrella Ranch, 11415 N. Mayberry Rd. in Mission. The RGVHCC 2020-21 business leaders and businesses of the year will be recognized at honored at the event.  For sponsorship and ticket information, call 956-928-0060.

October 22-24 – The RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host First Annual RGV Jalapeño Amateur Championship. The three-day event will have a practice round on Friday with formal play on Saturday and Sunday.  Spots are open for 150 golfers to sign up and participate. Maximum handicap allowed is 24, and the format is two-player team Florida Scramble.  The handicap index differential between the two players may not exceed 10.  The USGA Handicap System will be used.  For a registration form or sponsorship information, call the RGVHCC office at 956-928-0060.
