1,172 new cases of COVID-19 were reported by Hidalgo County health officials on Tuesday, nearly doubling the amount of new cases reported the day before.
With the new numbers, Hidalgo County health officials announced that the county crossed a grim threshold in the total amount of known cases of the virus which now stands at 65,456.
Of those cases, 2,354 remain active.
On Monday, the county reported 733 new cases of COVID-19.
The county also reported 12 new deaths related to the disease Tuesday that came from eight men and four women whose ages ranged from their 30s to over the age of 70.
The deaths come from the cities of Mission, Pharr and Weslaco while two males, one in his 30s and the other over the age of 70, come from undisclosed cities.
417 county residents who are COVID-19 positive are in area hospitals with 146 of them being treated in intensive care units as of Tuesday.
