12 new COVID-19 deaths, 579 new cases reported in Hidalgo County

12 more Hidalgo County residents have succumbed to the COVID-19 virus as another 579 cases of the disease were reported Thursday by county health officials.

The new numbers make it a total of 2,478 COVID-19 related fatalities and 66,851 total cases of the disease.

Of the total cases, 2,414 remain active, county health officials stated in a news release.

The deaths come from eight males and four females from the cities of Edinburg, McAllen, Mercedes, Mission, Pharr, San Juan, Weslaco and two undisclosed cities, the release stated. The ages of the victims ranged from their 50s to over the age of 70.

385 county residents remain in area hospitals to be treated for COVID-19 related complications as 148 of them are placed in intensive care units.
