Heavy rains are a reminder for need to be ready
HARLINGEN, Tex., 7 JULY 2021 — As flooding spreads, the American Red Cross has opened an evacuation center with Pharr-San Juan Alamo ISD for residents of Hidalgo County. We also are reminding people in the surrounding areas to be prepared for heavy rains and flooding that may be dangerous and to be prepared to seek shelter away from their home.
We have opened a shelter for people affected by flooding in Hidalgo County at 500 E Nolana Loop in Pharr. Residents should check in with a Red Cross volunteer when they arrive. The shelter is currently projected to be open through Thursday evening (July 8). We are available for interviews and will be posting updates as we have them on our social media platforms @RedCrossTXGC.
We recommend that residents of Hidalgo County and nearby areas have a disaster kit ready and check with local officials for the latest information about floods in their area.
Key items to include in your kit are personal protective equipment, prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and a digital copy of important documents. Don’t forget to bring special items for pets, for family members who have unique needs, or for children, such as diapers, formula and toys.
