  • The UTRGV Symphony Orchestrareturns to the stage with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8. Guest soloist Dr. Diana Seitz joins the orchestra in Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G minor and Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. The concert is a musical tribute to the victims and those who have suffered their loss due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr., Edinburg. The performance will be repeated the next night at the TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 Taylor Ave., Brownsville. Admission is free for both concerts.

  • The International Museum of Art & Sciencewill hold a Dia de los Muertos Festival and Market at the Museumevent from 1 to 5 p.m. IMAS is located at 1900 W. Nolana Ave. It includes a performance by UTRGV Ballet Folklórico, art activities which include making a sugar skull ($2 per participant), museum exhibits, shop at the Museum market, and games of Lotería.   • Head to the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr., at 7 p.m. for “Classical Meets Jazz: Picnic Suite by Claude Bolling.”The UTRGV Patron of the Arts pays homage to the legendary French pianist, jazzman, and composer Claude Bolling. Bolling’s work is a crossover of impressionistic harmonies with Baroque counterpoint and light jazz – covering the gamut of musical tastes and “something for everyone.” The performance features faculty artists Krista Jobson, flute/alto flute; Héctor Rodríguez, guitar; Juan-Pablo Andrade, piano; George Amorím, bass; and Lupe Barrera, drums. Admission is free.
  • Pianist Kenneth Saxonperforms music inspired by the great outdoors with movements from Beethoven/Liszt’s “Pastoral” Symphony, Bartok’s “Out of Doors” Suite, Messiaen’s “Catalogue D’Oiseaux” and Roncal’s “Bolivian Cuecas.” The performance begins at 7 p.m. at the TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 Taylor Ave., Brownsville.   • The UTRGV Double Bass Studio Recital, part of the Student Performance Series, presents Bottesini’s 200th Anniversary Concert, at the UTRGV library auditorium at 7 p.m., 1201 W. University Dr., Edinburg. Admission is free.

  • The Valley Symphony Orchestraoffers a pre-season chamber performance of Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings in E-flat major. Concertmaster Geoffrey Wong will lead the ensemble of eight musicians in this intimate 40-minute concert experience, and only 200 seats to be sold. Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlánbrings their World Tour 2021 to the McAllen Performing Arts Center, 801 Convention Center Blvd. The performance begins at 8 p.m. Also on stage will be Sharyland High School’s Nuevo Cascabel, UTRGV Ballet Folklórico and Mariachi Aztlán, Mariachi Nuevo Santander from Roma High School and Ashley Treviño accompanied by McHi Mariachi Oro.   • The “Michelangelo: A Different View” exhibitwill be on display at the McAllen Convention Center Ballroom, 801 Convention Center Blvd., featuring over 45 Vatican reproductions of Renaissance artist Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Frescoes. It runs through Nov. 7 and tickets will begin at $10 for children under 12, and $17 or $22, depending on the day of the week. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.

  • The UTRGV Master Chorale Fall Concert, “Bach and Better than Ever,” begins at 7 p.m. at the TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 Taylor Ave., Brownsville, on Oct. 19. Dr. Sean Taylor and Dr. Matthew Coffey lead the UTRGV choirs in a performance featuring music by J.S. Bach, Morten Lauridsen, Mari Esabel Valverdi, and more.   • The horror, dark comedy stage production of The Weirdwritten by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will be performed in the next UTRGV University Productions Theatrepresentation. The play is intended for mature audiences. It will be staged all nights at 7:3 0.m., except on Oct. 24, which will be a 2 p.m. matinee.  The Oct. 23 performance is will offer ASL interpretation.   • A free creative arts event for veterans and family members age 14 and up will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Estero Llano Grande Valley State Park in Weslaco.   • Seymour the Trollby David Carren rounds out the season for the UTRGV University Theatre. A production for young audiences, Saturday’s performance is 7:30 p.m. with ASL interpretation, and May 1 is a 2 p.m. matinee. It will be staged in the Allbert L.
