January 8– Expand your art skills at a Painting for Beginners workshop at Bentsen-RGV State Park at 10 a.m. Programs are free with park admission, but space is limited; reservations are required. January 10– RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s next Manic Monday Mixer will be held at La Quinta Convention Center Hotel from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for business people to enjoy appetizers and beverages while networking and creating new business leads. Door prize winners receive an extra opportunity to talk about their business. For more information, call the RGVHCC office at 928-0060.

January 13– At 6 p.m., Quinta Mazatlán hosts W.F. Strong for a special presentation of “Vultures and Raptors: Birds I’ve Come to Know and Love.” A book sale and book signing will follow the program. January 25– The next Speer Memorial Library book discussion features The Woman’s Hour, to take place in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m.  The public is invited. Copies of the book are available to check out when signing up for the discussion; stop by the library or call at 580-8754to obtain a copy.  This title is also available in English as an e-book at ebook.yourcloudlibrary.com/library/HidalgoCountyLS. January 27-28 – The Mission Historical Museum presents the 1979 western film, She Came to the Valley, based on the novel written by local author, Cleo Dawson. It will be shown each day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A copy of the novel will be given with the purchase of a ticket. Tickets are $5 and will not be sold at the door. February 2– The next IMAS Museum from Home workshop studies Black Art History. Youth participate through a live Zoom webinar hosted by an IMAS educator to lead them through a hands-on lesson. Supplies are included in an activity kit to be picked up via curbside on the Saturday prior to the workshop. Cost is $6 for IMAS members and $12 for others. February 5 –The RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Second Annual RGV Sporting Skeet Shoot and registration opens at 8 a.m. at Mi Ranchito Sporting Clays in Linn San Manuel. Teams of three registration fee is $300 and limited to the first 40 teams. Shooters provide their own shotguns, ammunition and hearing and eye protection. Clays will fly at 9:15 a.m. Breakfast, lunch, snacks and a gift bag will be provided. There will be door prizes, bucket drawings and a silent auction.  Annie Oakley shooting is $20 per person, Mulligans are $10 each with a maximum of four per person, and the Bell Pepper shot is $20 per person. Prize awards are $900, first place; $600, second; $300, third; and $100 each awarded to the highest overall male and female scores.  A youth division of 17 and under will include male and female winners awarded a prize belt buckle. March 2– The next IMAS Museum from Home workshop studies hydroponics. Youth participate through a live Zoom webinar hosted by an IMAS educator to lead them through a hands-on lesson.
