February 12– In a Love Your Heart program, learn all about animal hearts and learn ways the heart helps keep humans and wildlife alive and healthy through interactive heart pumping games, arts, and crafts at Quinta Mazatlan, 600 Sunset, McAllen. February 19– Join Urban Ecologist John Brush for an introduction to the world of birds and birding at 2 p.m. at Quinta Mazatlan, 600 Sunset in McAllen. Guests will learn about the diverse lives and beauty of birds, followed by tips and tricks for bird identification. Included are recommendations on different resources to start the birding journey, plus a short guided bird walk. Admission is $5 at QuintaMazatlan.ticketleap.com.

February 19– The “love” month continues at Quinta Mazatlan, 600 Sunset in McAllen, with the next program on “Love Birds.” Choose the 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. session to discover Quinta’s love birds in residence, from the Northern Cardinal to the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The activities conclude with making bird-friendly Valentine treats. The program is free with park admission available at QuintaMazatlan.ticketleap.com.

February 26 – The public is invited to volunteer for the annual Spring Hawk Watch at Bentsen-RGV State Park in Mission from March 1 to April 30. There will be a Raptor Identification Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. This will be a classroom focus on field identification of birds of prey in flight. To register for the workshop or for more information on Hawk Watch, contact Ranger Roy Rodriguez at 956-584-9156, Ext. 228. Bentsen-RGV State Park is located at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. Volunteers will ride the park tram and meet at the hawk tower daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the Hawk Watch. Everyone is asked to bring their binoculars, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and drinking water. Park admission is required.

March 1-April 30– Join Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park naturalists and volunteers from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hawk Tower to observe, count, and discuss the thousands of raptors that migrate through the park. March 25-27– TheMission High School Class of 1970 will hold their 50-year reunion with a mixer at the Whistling Duck in Mission on Friday, a semi-formal evening dinner and dance on Saturday at the Mission Event Center, and a farewell breakfast on Sunday (location to be announced).
