October 28-31

  • The UTRGV Faculty Exhibition continues on display in all galleries. Faculty works of art can be seen in the Visual Arts Annex and Charles & Dorothy Clark Gallery on the Edinburg campus at 1201 W. University Dr. and at the Rusteberg Gallery, 2101 Gorgas Dr. in Brownsville.
  • It’s time for the annual Octubafest at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr., Edinburg. The performance begins at 7 p.m. as the UTRGV Tuba Euphonium Ensemble performs a program written for tuba and euphonium. Go to utrgv.edu/arts for information.

October 29

  • Join in the family-friendly event Halloween in the Park at Quinta Mazatlán, 600 Sunset Dr., McAllen, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come dressed in costumes, walk the Sticks and Bones trail, learn more at the education booths, visit and do some shopping with local arts and crafts vendors and stop by the food vendors for some treats. There will be live performances by the City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Folkorico dancers, Main Stage Dance Studio and the Palmview High Mariachi & Folklorico groups. Admission is $5.
  • A performance by Isaac Bustos, classical guitarist, begins at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr., Edinburg. Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for seniors, UTRGV students, faculty and staff. Go to utrgv.edu/arts for tickets and information.
  • The music of the 11th Annual Hallo Flute Concert matches the season with festivities to enhance the musical celebration. The public is invited to come dressed in costume. There will be candy for all, prizes for the best costume in the audience and on stage.  It begins at 5 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr., Edinburg. Admission is free.
  • The 2022 Halloween Spooktacular Truck or Treat takes place at the Harlingen Convention Center, 701 Harlingen Heights Dr. The car, truck and motorcycle show runs from 4 to 8 p.m. and is open to all makes, models and years of vehicles. Vehicle registration is $20 and move-in begins at 3 p.m. There will be trick or treating for kids, costume contest for all ages and pets, along with food vendors, music and entertainment.   • The Second Annual Trails of Treats runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lon C. Hill Destination Park, 1217 Fair Park Blvd., Harlingen. There will be games, trunk or treat, candy, a haunted house, pumpkin patch, food trucks and local vendors.  Call Christina Mendiola at 956-245-1222.

November 3

  • UTRGV’s Sin Fronteras Contemporary Ensemble performs at 7 p.m. at the TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 Taylor Ave. in Brownsville. Admission is free. The program of contemporary music is made up of UTRGV faculty and other members of the RGV music community featuring a variety of mixed chamber ensembles.

  • UTRGV Dance Program presents the 2022 Senior Project Showcase, “Whirlwind of Emotion,” at 7:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr. in Edinburg . Admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for UTRGV students. For more information, contact zeydy.garza@utrgv.edu.

November 4

  • The Valley Symphony Orchestra begins the season with the Romantic Masterpieces, featuring Dominic Cheli performing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Dovrak’s Eighth Symphony, a work that travels from joyful to ominous and back again. Also on the program is Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5. Tickets start at just $20.   • In “Fugitive Scripts: A Concert of Computer Music Works,” Dr. Anthony T. Marasco, assistant professor of music technology and composition, performs original compositions on various electronic and computer music instruments. It begins at 3 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr. in Edinburg.
  • The Rite of Spring with Vesna Duo will be presented at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr., Edinburg.

November 14

  • The next ART_oLoGy class hosted by the Edinburg Cultural Arts Division will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library, 1906 S. Closner Blvd. All adults are invited to register for the free. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis and will be limited to 40 students per class. Supplies will be provided.   • UTRGV Theatre Department presents Moliére in the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre, 1201 W. University Dr., Edinburg. They bring French playwright Moliére’s wit to stage in a pair of short comedies – The Flying Doctor and Two Precious Maidens Ridiculed – for a farcical mixture of love, mayhem, trickery and more.   • One of heavy metal’s all-time great bands, Judas Priest, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with the launch of a new North American fall tour. The band is making a stop at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg. The 50 Heavy Metal Years Tour also features Queensryche as the opening band. December 2

  • The Valley Symphony Orchestra’s beloved holiday tradition, A Touch of Frost, returns and again features the Valley Symphony Chorale and selections from The Nutcracker and Handel’s Messiah. New in 2022, tenor David Sadlier will perform, and new works including a full symphony and chorale performance of Mariah Carey’s classic, All I Want for Christmas is You, are planned. Santa will be on hand for pictures to spread holiday cheer. It begins at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. February 17

  • Pianist Haysun Kang performs with the Valley Symphony Orchestra for the Out of This World concert. This concert for family audiences will feature the bold and brassy music of the Pixar film The Incredibles as well as two movements (Mars and Jupiter) from Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Finally, Kang performs George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a uniquely American composition that fuses jazz, ragtime, and bolero styles into one soaring work. It begins at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center.   • What happens when the minds of Picasso and Einstein come together – from the perspective and talents of actor and writer Steve Martin? Martin’s imagination explores the possibilities in the next UTRGV Theatre production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile. With a 1904 setting, they “debate their work, the nature of creative endeavors both scientific and artistic, and trade witty banter.” Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.   • The Valley Symphony Orchestra presents Carmen y Mas at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The concert features the music of the opera Carmen and special guests Mariachi Aztlán, the award-winning UTRGV-based ensemble. Accompanied by the full orchestra, Mariachi Aztlán will deliver a signature high-energy and passionate performance. April 21

  • The Valley Symphony Orchestra season finale, West Side Story, is joined by powerhouse pianist Asiya Korepanova performing Edvard Greig’s Piano Concerto in A minor on a program that also includes selections from Bernstein’s masterpiece musical theatre work West Side Story. The Latin rhythms of West Side Story paired with Korepanova’ uninhibited high-energy style will close out the Symphony of Stars season on a high note. It begins at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center.   • Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Days by Marisela Treviño Orta brings the UTRGV Theatre 2022-23 season to an end. Follow the drama of Cassandra and her brother on a journey, both “bittersweet and magical,” as they make a road trip to the final destination of Monarch butterflies.  Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.  Tickets range from $5 to $15.
