January 14 & 20

  • The Mission Historical Museum 17th Annual Mission Quilt Show exhibit opens on Jan. 14, 2023, and continues through Friday, Feb. 17,. An awards reception and Turning of the Quilts program will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20. MHM is located at 900 Doherty Ave., Mission. Admission is free. January 14

  • The Mission Historical Museum hosts George Diaz in a lecture on “Liquor Smuggling in the Prohibition Era in South Texas” at 11 a.m. at the museum, 900 Doherty Ave. Admission is free to the public. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. Díaz is an associate professor of history at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where he teaches U.S. History, Borderlands, and Mexican American History. January 15

  • The International Museum of Art & Science hosts Dr. Jongsun Kim from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Science from 3 to 4 p.m. at the museum, 1900 Nolana Ave.The lecture is included in general admission. Dr. Kim’s talk will cover his recent findings on the consequence of diverse nitrogen input caused in coastal productivity and organic carbon fluxes in the coastal Gulf of Mexico (GOM). January 20-21

  • The City of McAllen and McAllen Parks & Recreation will host the 10th Annual McAllen Marathon Scott Crane Run, along with the McAllen Marathon Health & Wellness Expo will be held at the McAllen Convention Center. Registrants can choose from a 5K, 10K, Relay Marathon, Half Marathon or Full Marathon. This is a Boston qualifying race. Participants receive finisher medals, shirts and swag. Registration deadline is Jan. 20 or when the race meets maximum capacity. The full marathon, half marathon, and six-person relay marathon will kick off at 7 a.m. The 5K and 10K races will begin at 7:10 a.m. The Kids Final Mile begins at 10 a.m. For more information, sign-up and fees, runners can register for any of the races by visiting mcallenmarathon.com.

February 17

  • Pianist Haysun Kang performs with the Valley Symphony Orchestra for the Out of This World concert. This concert for family audiences will feature the bold and brassy music of the Pixar film The Incredibles as well as two movements (Mars and Jupiter) from Gustav Holst’s The Planets. Finally, Kang performs George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a uniquely American composition that fuses jazz, ragtime, and bolero styles into one soaring work. It begins at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center.   • What happens when the minds of Picasso and Einstein come together – from the perspective and talents of actor and writer Steve Martin? Martin’s imagination explores the possibilities in the next UTRGV Theatre production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile. With a 1904 setting, they “debate their work, the nature of creative endeavors both scientific and artistic, and trade witty banter.” Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.Tickets range from $5 to $15.   • The Valley Symphony Orchestra presents Carmen y Mas at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The concert features the music of the opera Carmen and special guests Mariachi Aztlán, the award-winning UTRGV-based ensemble. Accompanied by the full orchestra, Mariachi Aztlán will deliver a signature high-energy and passionate performance. April 21

  • The Valley Symphony Orchestra season finale, West Side Story, is joined by powerhouse pianist Asiya Korepanova performing Edvard Greig’s Piano Concerto in A minor on a program that also includes selections from Bernstein’s masterpiece musical theatre work West Side Story. The Latin rhythms of West Side Story paired with Korepanova’ uninhibited high-energy style will close out the Symphony of Stars season on a high note. It begins at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. April 21-23

  • Somewhere: A Primer for the End of Daysby Marisela Treviño Orta brings the UTRGV Theatre 2022-23 season to an end.Follow the drama of Cassandra and her brother on a journey, both “bittersweet and magical,” as they make a road trip to the final destination of Monarch butterflies.  Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.  Tickets range from $5 to $15.
