- The UTRGV School of Art & Design will host the MFA Thesis Exhibitionof Kaylee Hernandez, “Since I was a girl,” with an opening reception at 6 p.m. It will be held in the Visual Arts Building Gallery on the Edinburg campus, 1201 W. University Dr.
- The UTRGV School of Music presents Manuel Matarrita, pianist,in a performance at 6:30 p.m. at the TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 Taylor Ave. in Brownsville.
March 3-5
- The 54th Annual Fiesta Edinburg will be held at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg. Set to perform on Friday, March 3, is Grammy Award winner Los Tigres Del Norte, and the Randy Rogers Band will headline on Saturday, March 4. Tickets for each concert can be purchased at bertogdenarena.com. The public can expect attractions such as the Heart of America Carnival, America’s Got Talent Fearless Flores Family, and Contacto animal and dinosaur exhibits. - What happens when the minds of Picasso and Einstein come together – from the perspective and talents of actor and writer Steve Martin? Martin’s imagination explores the possibilities in the next UTRGV Theatre production of Picasso at the Lapin Agile. With a 1904 setting, they “debate their work, the nature of creative endeavors both scientific and artistic, and trade witty banter.” Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.Tickets range from $5 to $15. - The La Frontera International Piano closing concert begins at 7 p.m. at the TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 Taylor Ave. in Brownsville.
- The FESTIBA Mariachi Festival Grand Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr. in Edinburg. Admission is $20.
March 5
- The Gladys Porter Zoo’s annual Ocelot 5K Run supporting ocelot conservation starts at 7:30 a.m., and the corresponding 1-Mile fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Gladys Porter Zoo, 500 Ringgold, Brownsville. Packet pick-up will take place on March 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Meadows Room at the zoo. Cost to participate in the 5K run is only $35 and $30 for the 1-mile run per runner. This cost covers entrance to the zoo, a limited edition dri-fit ocelot shirt, race bib, and race medal. Runners of all ages are encouraged to participate in ocelot attire or costumes. Registration for the Ocelot Run is open at gpz.org.
- The annual Ocelot Conservation Day hosted by the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge will be held at Gladys Porter Zoo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the zoo grounds. Activities include a scavenger hunt, games, ocelot dress-up station, ocelot crafts and drawings, along with information tables, exhibits, and presentations featuring ocelot conservation. - The UTRGV Symphony Orchestra “Tunes for Toons!”performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the
TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 Taylor Ave. in Brownsville, on March 10 and again on March 11 at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Dr. in Edinburg. Admission is $5.
March 24
- The Valley Symphony Orchestra presents Carmen y Mas in the next concert at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. It features Mariachi Aztlán with the full symphony orchestra with the iconic music of the Carmen opera including Marquez’s Leyenda de Miliano and Bizet’s Carmen Suite. Individual and season tickets can be purchased in person at the MPAC box office, online at valleyorchestra.org, ticketmaster.com, or by calling the office at 956-661-1615. Educators (K-12 and higher education) with a valid school I.D. can purchase up to two tickets to VSO concerts for $20 each plus box office fees. - UTRGV’s Ballet Folkórico presents Alegría 2023 at 7:30 p.m. t the TSC Performing Arts Center, 90 Taylor Ave. in in Brownsville. In a collaboration of 40 dancers, 20 musicians, choreographers and scene designers, seven different states and regions will be represented during the show, including a pre-Hispanic piece, Tabasco, Huasteca Veracruzana, Calabaceados from Baja California Norte, Veracruz, Colima and Sinaloa. Opening curtain is 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3-4 and 10-11, and 2 p.m. matinees on Feb. 5 and 12. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and students, and $5 for children.
