April 22 – Sign-up is underway for the 2023 Texas Adopt-A-Beach (AAB) Coastwide Spring Cleanup. For information about registration and cleanup locations, register at TexasAdoptABeach.org or show up on-site the day. Check-in at each site is 8:30 a.m. and the cleanup runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and to bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of drinking water. April 22– The International Museum of Art & Science Young Adventurers Nature Art workshop will be held at 10 a.m. in the IMAS outdoor courtyard.to Celebrate Earth Day. This is for ages 3 to 6 with an accompanying adult. The children will create nature-inspired suncatchers. It runs 30 to40 minutes, including snack time. Cost is $5 and $3 for IMAS members. April 25 – The Native Plant Project guest speaker will be Juan Gonzalez, associate professor of geology at the UTRGV School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Science. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Valley Nature Center, 301 S. Border St. in Weslaco. He will speak on “The Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight,” to explore the history of the Rio Grande Valley going back 43 million years. The public is invited. Admission is free. April 28 –The Texas General Land Office announced the application for the Homeowner Assistance and Reimbursement Programs will close at 5 p.m. on this date. Applications will continue to be reviewed in all eligible counties affected by flooding events in the Rio Grande Valley in 2018 and 2019. Homeowners should visit recovery.texas.gov/harp to apply online, download a printable application, or get in-person assistance at a regional Homeowner Assistance and Reimbursement Programs office. April 29 – The staff at Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center, 600 Sunset Dr. in McAllen, will host a nature through writing class, Exploring Nature Writing: Spirituality of Trees. It runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants will explore native trees within the thorn forest by engaging their olfactory, vision and skin senses as a means of “place-seeking.” The class fee is $3 per person, with advance registration at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com.
