April 28 –The Texas General Land Office announced the application for the Homeowner Assistance and Reimbursement Programs will close at 5 p.m. today. Applications will continue to be reviewed in all eligible counties affected by flooding events in the Rio Grande Valley in 2018 and 2019.             Homeowners should visit recovery.texas.gov/harp to apply online, download a printable application, or get in-person assistance at a regional Homeowner Assistance and Reimbursement Programs office. April 29 – The staff at Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center, 600 Sunset Dr. in McAllen, will host a nature through writing class, Exploring Nature Writing: Spirituality of Trees. It runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants will explore native trees within the thorn forest by engaging their olfactory, vision and skin senses as a means of “place-seeking.” The class fee is $3 per person, with advance registration at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com. April 30– Learn the tricks of outdoor Dutch Oven Cooking at 2 p.m. at Bentsen-RGV State Park, 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr., Mission. Reservation is required. Included in park admission, meet at the tram turnaround at park headquarters. Call 956-584-9156 to confirm the schedule in the event of weather or other changes.

May 1– The RGV Hispanic Chamber will host the next Manic Monday Mixer at the Barrel House Kitchen & Bar, 1927 S. Tourist Dr. in Edinburg, at 5:30 p.m. Bring plenty of business cards and those bringing door prizes get extra time to speak about their company. For questions, call 956-928-0060.

May 4– The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce will host a business networking mixer from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Texas Regional Bank, 4925 S. McColl Rd, Edinburg. The event is open to both chamber members and non-members to meet and network with other professionals, enjoy complimentary appetizers, and have a chance to win door prizes. May 6 – The Leadership Edinburg Class XXXIV will host a themed fundraiser, “Derby at the Depot,” from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at the historic Edinburg Chamber Depot, 602 W. University Dr. The event benefits restoration of the façade of American Legion Post 408. Guests are encouraged to dress in Derby attire, with prizes awarded to the best-dressed male and female. There will be a live screening of the Kentucky Derby, a silent auction, drawing, and live music, food and drinks. Tickets are $75 per person or $100 per couple. May 18 & 24– The Mission and Sharyland Baccalaureate services will feature Micah Crump as guest speaker. The Mission CISD service will begin at 6:30 p.m. on May 18 at the Mission High School Neuhaus gym. The Sharyland ISD service begins at 7 p.m. on May 24 at the Pioneer High School gym. Crump grew up in Central America where his parents were missionaries for 13 years. A Mission resident, he is the Lead Student Pastor at Palm Valley Church. The public is both invited to attend both events. He continues to travel, leading missionary groups to Eastern Europe, Central and South America.

June 6-9– IMAS Operation Imagination: Summer Camp begins with SciTech Camp, for incoming 4th-8th grade campers. Camp includes activities, exhibit exploration, outdoor recess and an afternoon snack.
