June 9

  • The next Edinburg Police Department summer Movies with a Cop outdoor screening will be “Encanto.”It begins at 8 p.m. at Edinburg Municipal Park Field #1. Bring blankets or chairs for seating and snacks to munch on. The event is free and open to the public. There will be pre-screening activities and opportunities to interact with Edinburg’s police officers.

June 10

  • The Gladys Porter Zoo’s Ridley Rush 1-Mile Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. at the zoo, 500 Ringgold in Brownsville. Proceeds benefit the Bi-National Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle conservation project. The one-mile route takes guests through the GPZ grounds as they encounter obstacles hatchlings endure on their rush to the ocean throughout their journey to adulthood. Runners of all ages are encouraged to participate and wear sea-turtle attire or costumes. Registrants can also purchase a limited edition Ridley Rush T-shirt when they register. The cost to participate is $15 for adults and children. It covers the entrance to the Zoo, a race bib, and race medal. Packet pick-up will take place on Friday, June 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Meadows Room at the zoo. Register for the Ridley Rush at gpz.org.

June 16 & July 4

  • The 95th Annual McAllen Independence Day Celebration on July 4 begins with an early morning 4K race, a patriotic program, immediately followed by the Main Street Parade and the Freedom Festival at Archer Park.  Music, food, and games will be highlights of the events.  The event will conclude with a concert and fireworks extravaganza. The deadline to submit an application for a parade entry is June 16. Entries for businesses are $50 and non-profits can enter at no cost as long as a 501 C(3) is provided. Entries should fit into one of the following categories: antique vehicles, marching/walking, color guard, vehicle club, float, horses, band, or pageant. Entry forms for the parade are available by request by emailing pardmarketing@mcallen.net, call the office at 956-681-3320, or at the McAllen Parks & Recreation Office, 1000 S. Ware Rd.  The 4K race is part of the McAllen Marathon Scott Crane Running Series and runners who complete all five of the races will receive a series medal.  Registration is open at mcallenmarathon.com and the registration fee is $30.

June 30-July 1

  • Country music star Aaron Watson headlines this year’s Texas Cook’Em High Steaks barbecue cook-off and festival at Ebony Hills Golf Course in Edinburg. Cover bands Fooz Fighters and No Duh will perform. Barbecue enthusiasts will showcase their skills in a variety of categories. It includes a car & truck show, kids fun zone, food & craft vendors, and more. The firework show will light up the night sky on July 1, Freedom SkyDive Jump participate. Registration for Texas Cook’Em High Steaks cook-off is now open on the edinburg.com website. To apply to become a vendor, visit website and fill out the vendor application form.
