September 8 – October 31– Join in this season’s Hawk Watch that takes place daily at the Hawk Tower at Bentsen-RGV State Park, 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. Volunteers will be available from 9 to 11 a.m., weather permitting, to help observers identify these birds of prey during the migration count. Call 956-584-9156 for more information.

September 10– Time to delve into nature’s cuisine and learn about Useful and Edible Plants at 9 a.m. at Bentsen-RGV State Park, 2800 S. September 14 – The RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce annual Latina Leadership Conference will be held at the Mission Event Center. It includes breakfast, lunch, a cocktail reception and workshops on 10 different topics   The conference begins with registration and breakfast at 8 a.m. with the official welcome at 9 a.m. There will also be a Laughter Yoga instructor, vendors, and professional headshots available. September 15 & 16 – Hidalgo County officials and the Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) will offer a free dental clinic to provide needed services to underserved patients in Hidalgo County. The services, which are free to patients, include basic pain-relieving and preventive procedures such as fillings and extractions. The clinic will be held at the Bert Ogden Arena, 4900 S. I-69C on a first come, first serve basis beginning at 6 a.m. Anyone, from children to adults, will be served, however patients under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.            Patients are encouraged to arrive as early as 5:30 a.m. and expect a long day. Patients should bring a list of their medications. Food and drinks will be provided for those waiting for dental care. For information or to volunteer, visit tmominc.com.

September 22 – Nominations for the 40th Annual Governor’s Volunteer Awards close on this date. The awards are to honor those who have made a significant difference in their communities. Nominations are open in nine categories: Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award, First Lady’s Rising Star Award, Volunteer of the Year Award, Volunteer Family of the Year Award, Community Champion Award, Education Champion Award, Corporate Champion Award, Rebuild Texas Disaster Impact Award, and AmeriCorps Legacy of Service Award. September 23– Be a B.O.S.S at the Bentsen Outdoor Skills Showcase from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr., Mission. Celebrate 100 Years of Texas State Parks to see what there is to do at Bentsen and re-discover the outdoors. Learn camping and fishing skills, try a hand at kayaking or archery, and experience outdoor wellness and nature activities.
