October 20-31– Join in this season’s Hawk Watch that takes place daily at the Hawk Tower at Bentsen-RGV State Park, 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. Volunteers will be available from 9 to 11 a.m., weather permitting, to help observers identify these birds of prey during the migration count. Call 956-584-9156 for more information.

October 20 – The RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host their 2023 banquet, 6 p.m. until midnight, at the Corinthian Event Center in Mission. With the theme “Phantom of the Gala,” the event is a formal black-tie-optional masquerade ball that will feature a live performance, welcome reception with cocktails, live music and the annual awards. The evening will include a three-course meal, crafted cocktails, live entertainment and photo opportunities.            The Gala will also feature a live and silent auction fundraiser to benefit the RGV Hispanic Chamber, which supports small businesses and the community at large. Admission is $125 for individuals and $1,500 to reserve a table for eight. Sponsorships are available at the following levels: Platinum, $6000; Gold, $4000; Silver, $2000; and Bronze, $1000. October 21– Reservations are need for the Jr. Ranger Club on Saturday Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at Bentsen-RGV State Park, 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. Scheduled programs are included in the park admission. Meet at the tram turnaround at the park headquarters. Call ahead to confirm the program schedule at 956-584-9156.

October 21 & 26 –Oct. 21 is the deadline for Quinta Mazatlán Native Garden contest entries. Anyone who has put effort into adding native plants to their space is invited to submit an entry into the free contest. Winners will receive two tickets to the Planta Nativa Social, to be held on Thursday, Oct. 26, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., two Quinta Mazatlán T-shirts, a certificate, and a homegrown native plant. November 4 & December 2 – The Game Changers McTX are preparing for their 10th annual “Operation RGV Cares” event to collect, address and ship care packages and greeting cards to service members deployed during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. Shipping dates are Nov. 4 for Thanksgiving and Dec. 2 for Christmas packages to arrive on time.  Anyone who knows a unit or service member deployed during this period and would like for them to receive care packages, is asked to provide their name, address, and point of contact.
