December 1– This is the deadline date for South Texas College Theatre’s Third Annual South Texas Latinx New Play Festival entries by all Latino playwrights to submit their new play scripts. Scripts can be submitted at https://forms.gle/rQZHJmJihghKWpMd6. Deadline for play submissions is by the end 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1. All Latino/Latinx/e community over the age of 18 are invited to submit. December 1-2– Bring binoculars and take time to stretch the legs during the Bentsen Bird Walks that take place both mornings at 8:30 a.m. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. Meet at the tram turnaround at park headquarters. December 2 – This the next shipping date for the Game Changers McTX 10th annual “Operation RGV Cares” event to collect, address and ship care packages and greeting cards to service members deployed during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. Anyone who knows a unit or service member deployed during this period and would like for them to receive care packages, is asked to provide their name, address, and point of contact. December 3– It’s Winter Funday at the Museum as the Gelman Stained Glass Museum hosts a cookies, hot chocolate and merry tunes event combined with art. Cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Visitors will paint stained-glass sheets and can participate in add-on activities; choose a scavenger hunt ($10) and create a faux stained-glass activity ($12). December 4 – The annual RGV Hispanic Chamber Ugly Sweater Christmas Mixer will be held at The Legacy Event Center, 4610 Jackson Rd., Edinburg, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A prize will be awarded to the Ugliest Man and Woman Sweater.  Besides the sweater contest, there will be food, beverages, networking and door prizes.  An unwrapped child’s toy for Operation Christmas Toys is required to enter the event.  Those bringing door prizes and an unwrapped toy will receive tickets to win door prizes. December 13 – This is the deadline to donate to the Hidalgo County Pct. 3 Third Annual Toy Drive. Unwrapped gifts for boys and girls from kindergarten to 12th grade can be dropped off in Palmview and Mission in the following locations: PJ’s Coffee, Santa Fe Bakery Café, and Materiales El Valle, all in Palmview; and McCoys Building Supply, Ranch House Burgers, Brick Fire Pizza, Irrigation District 6, United Irrigation District, Salad Delights and More, and the Precinct 3 office, 724 Breyfogle Rd., all in Mission. December 15 – This date is the deadline to register for the 2024 South Texas Border Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist training class. Cameron, Hidalgo and Starr county residents over the age of 18 and Winter Texans are invited to participate.Class size is limited. The cost is $150 and includes textbook, fees, T-shirt, name tag and a one-year membership. Scholarships of $100 are available. To apply for the class or request a scholarship, follow the instructions in the downloadable icons on the “New Class” webpage at stbctmn.org/the-next-class.
