MISSION – It is with great sadness that the family of Norma Ester Garza Vela announce her passing on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the age of 72 in Mission.

Norma will be lovingly remembered by her husband Genaro Vela. They had four children, Melinda (Guadalupe) Contreras, Margarita (Joe) Hernandez, Jimmy Vela and Eric Vela.

Norma was born on September 23, 1951, to Olivero Jr. and Ester Garza of Mission. She graduated from Sharyland High School in 1970 and attended the University of Pan American where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1973.

Norma started her teaching career at Mission C.I.S.D. where she taught at Marcell Elementary and Mims Elementary. She retired after 31 years of service.

Norma, a devoted educator and woman of God, attended and volunteered at numerous community, church and school events. Norma will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her interaction with her students and making sure others were taken care of.

She loved her family and friends unconditionally, especially her grandchildren, Devon, Oscar, Garcie, Gabby, Annalissa, Cristian, Madeline, Isabela, Allen, Mila, Leeyah, Rylen, Gavin, Aaron, Arnold, Nick and one great-granddaughter Leliana.

In addition to her immediate family, Norma is survived by her sister, Thelma (Julio) Garcia; brothers, Olivero (Sylvia) Garza and Jaime (Elizabeth) Garza; sister-in-law, Alicia Garza; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Olivero Jr. and Ester Garza, and a brother, Oscar Omar Garza.

Viewing and visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Ric Brown Funeral Home, 621 E. Griffin Pkwy. in Mission, from 4 to 9 p.m. with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 620 N. Dunlap Ave., Mission, at 10 a.m. followed by internment at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
