December 15 – This is the last day to register for the 2024 South Texas Border Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist training class. Cameron, Hidalgo and Starr county residents over the age of 18 and Winter Texans are invited to participate.Class size is limited. The cost is $150 and includes textbook, fees, T-shirt, name tag and a one-year membership. Scholarships of $100 are available. To apply for the class or request a scholarship, follow the instructions in the downloadable icons on the “New Class” webpage at stbctmn.org/the-next-class. December 15-16– Bring binoculars and take time to stretch the legs during the Bentsen Bird Walks that take place both mornings at 8:30 a.m. Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. Meet at the tram turnaround at park headquarters. Programs are included with park admission; visitors are asked to call ahead to confirm the program schedule at 956-584-9156.

December 15 – January 3 – Whether you are an avid bird watcher or just learning, the general public is invited to join a team in the annual Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count. There are several one-day opportunities and a variety of locations across the Rio Grande Valley during this time to participate. For a quick check to see the area of a count, go to audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count. Click on the highlighted link for the map view, and drag the map to bring up the area within the specific circle.

December 16– Meet at the La Familia Nature Center for the Bentsen Holiday Fun Day from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. Programs are included with park admission; visitors are asked to call ahead to confirm the program schedule at 956-584-9156.

December 16– Reservations are required for the Star Party at 7 p.m. at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr. in Mission. Meet at the tram turnaround at park headquarters. December 17 – The “Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope” adoption event at Palm Valley Animal Society runs now through Dec. 17. Adoption fees at theTrenton and Laurie P. Andrews locations in Edinburg includes the fee-waived adoptions for adult cats and dogs with fees of $25 for kittens and $50 for puppies. All interested adopters can find more details online at pvastx.org. Families interested in adoption are encouraged to research the pet they want to adopt, as well as the requirements. Although fees may be lowered for the adoption, the cost, needs and care for the new family member is an ongoing commitment, not just for the holidays. For more information, go to pvastx.org.
