McAllen ISD: Yebra removed as coach, Rowe must forfeit basketball games

The University Interscholastic League’s 31-5A District Executive Committee determined Wednesday that James “Nikki” Rowe’s boys basketball team let an ineligible player take the court and determined the team had to forfeit all games in which that player took part, according to McAllen ISD.

According to the district, that decision followed an internal investigation that found Coach Jose Yebra used an ineligible player during the 2023-2024 season.

The district says it relieved Yebra of his coaching duties and self-reported to the UIL.

“These actions are not a reflection of McAllen ISD’s excellent sports programs. The district expects rules and regulations to be followed at all times,” a statement from the district says.

Attempts to reach Yebra for comment on Wednesday were not successful.

Yebra appears to have been absent at games since at least last week.

There has to be more to this story. Politics comes to mind.

      That was my first thought.

There is more to the story. I don’t believe he would have the player on his team if ineligible.

Politics has nothing to do with it, in this dsituation. The diisttict determined that an inelgible player was used, after investigating the players status. It was done with mal intent or incompetence. Regardless which reason, that person should not lead a Varsity team.

Sounds like you’re a bit jealous of this coach…

I meet coach in 2018. Unless he changed his coaches philosophy over night, moreover hired some guys gun ing for head coach position.

But firing a man. For speaking to a kid when you in the kids business shouldn’t be a problem.

Now if flat said you need to get over and play and he maliciously knew and failed to report I see a 10-15 games suspension long the next season but plus that forfeiture of wins the.

I hate it that the kids suffer for adult mistake.
