The Battle of Conway: Futbol Edition
Tuesday night at Tom Landry Stadium, the Battle of Conway returned to the soccer field as the Mission Eagles and the Veterans Memorial Patriots faced off in a doubleheader featuring both the boys’ teams and girls’ teams.
The boys’ game kicked off first. Both teams were in desperate need of a win to strengthen their playoff chances. While the Eagles do have a better record in District 30-5A, the Patriots were determined to spoil their postseason hopes and stay in contention themselves.
The game didn’t take long to heat up. The Eagles’ Omar Garcia struck first, putting his team on the scoreboard early. The Eagles capitalized on their offensive momentum and pressed for a second goal to create a steep lead. However, the Patriots’ defense stood strong and kept their cool even during the Eagles’ attack led by strikers Noah Saldana and Jonathan Reynoga. This was until Reynoga found an opening in the Patriots’ midfield, who with only 14 seconds left in the first half, sent a shot past the goalkeeper. This gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead heading into the second half.
The second half saw a more aggressive Patriots team, with Maximiliano Fernandez and Andy Vaquero controlling the field while Ulyces Gonzalez and Pablo Ayala looked for scoring chances. Despite their efforts, the Eagles defense remained solid and refused to let the Patriots mount a comeback. Despite that, in the final minutes, the Patriots were awarded a penalty kick in which Gonzalez converted to cut the Eagles’ lead to 2-1. The Patriots had one last chance to tie the game and send it into PKs. They quickly regained possession and pressured the Eagles defense, but they were unable to find the back of the net. The Eagles held on for a hard-fought 2-1 win.
With the victory, the Eagles moved within striking distance of a playoff spot, while the Patriots playoff hopes slimmed, leaving them toward the bottom of the district standings.
After the game, Eagles’ Jonathan Reynoga reflected on the close win, “It all comes down to practice. We all practice as a team and win as a team. Thanks to our coaches, we’ve been improving since the start of the season. We didn’t start off well, but now we’re doing great. I’m proud of what we’re doing. As a senior, I really hope we can go far as a team.”
Reynoga also shared his thoughts on a win in the Battle of Conway rivalry, “This win feels good because they talk like they’re better, but they’re not. We’re the better team.”
The girls’ game followed. The Lady Patriots, one of the frontrunners in District 30-5A, were looking to extend their lead with a win. Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles were determined to make the Patriots aspirations more difficult with a win of their own.
The Lady Patriots had the first opportunity to strike with an early corner kick that was blocked by the Eagles’ defense. The Eagles then responded with aggressive offensive play, but the Patriots’ defense kept them at bay. The Patriots were forcing the Eagles to take difficult shots from the outside. A breakthrough came when the Patriots’ Nadia Padilla stepped up for a free kick. Padilla’s shot sailed over the Eagles goalkeeper and into the net, giving the Patriots a 1-0 lead. The Eagles continued to press for a tie making goal, but the Patriots’ defense remained immovable. Minutes later, Patriots’ Monica Regaldo doubled the Patriots score as she found an opening in the Eagles defense and put her team up 2-0 at the end of the first half.
Despite being in the deficit, the Eagles didn’t back down. They kept the Patriots on their toes throughout the second half and created several near scoring opportunities. Time and again, the Eagles got close, but the Patriots defense managed to thwart their efforts. With just one minute remaining, the Eagles finally found the back of the net when Stephany Lema scored, but it came too late. The Patriots held on for a 2-1 victory and secured a win to strengthen their position in the district standings.
With the win, the Lady Patriots improved to 8-4 in district play and remained in the hunt for the top spot in the district, while the Lady Eagles remained near the bottom of the standings.
Patriots’ Jasmine Ramirez reflected on the team’s performance after the close game against an aggressive team, “We’ve always practiced to stay strong, communicate with each other, and not stress during the game because that drains our energy and prevents us from playing to our full potential. We just talked and relaxed, playing as if it (the score) was 0-0.”
Though the chances are slim, it’s not impossible for the Patriots to secure another district championship. Ramirez also shared her thoughts on the idea of winning the district title this year, “It would mean a lot to us, especially for last year’s seniors who helped elevate our team. We want to get there again, and I know my girls can do it. I believe in them.”
Tonight, the Eagles and Lady Eagles will be hosting the Juarez-Lincoln Huskies and Lady Huskies at Tom Landry Hall of Fame Stadium, while the Patriots and the Lady Patriots will be traveling to Laredo to play the Nixon Mustangs and Lady Mustangs. Both boys’ games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m., while both girls’ games are scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
