La Joya ISD Police Department Recognized for Excellence During Specialized Emergency Response Training

La Joya, TX – With a commitment to strengthen safety in schools, members of the La Joya ISD Police Department recently completed the C3 Pathways – Active Shooter Advanced Incident Management (ASIM) Course.

A specialized training that focuses on an integrated approach to managing active shooter and hostile-event incidents, the course was the first of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley teaching modern practices for stopping threats, conducting rescues and managing the incident environment.

Emergency Management Coordinator David Torres and Captain Luis Lopez represented La Joya ISD at the intensive training, which featured coordinated law enforcement, fire/EMS and multi-discipline incident management strategies that are designed to accelerate decision-making and reduce confusion during high-stress events.

“This course is highly relevant for school districts that must plan for worst-case scenarios while protecting students and staff,” said Torres. “Our roles in the exercises were fluid and intentionally varied. We practiced multiple responsibilities, rotating through multiple leadership and operational roles, which allowed us to contribute valuable perspectives on emergency operations within a district setting.”

At the conclusion of the course, Torres and Captain Lopez were recognized with the Challenge Coin – an award presented to teams who demonstrate exceptional teamwork, adaptability and ability to assume multiple roles during practical exercises.

“This recognition ensures La Joya ISD is equipped to plan for worse-case scenarios while continuing to protect students and staff,” said Torres. “This recognition affirms our ongoing investment in in keeping our schools secure and highlights the district’s commitment to safety.”

La Joya ISD remains dedicated to advancing school security by investing in professional development opportunities. Lessons from the ASIM Course will shape the district’s emergency response plans and ensure a safe and secure learning environment for every student.
