Sharyland finalizes election results, reorganizes board officers

The Sharyland ISD Board of Trustees canvassed the May 2 election results, declaring Meagan Sullivan and Julio Cerda the respective winners of Place 1 and Place 2, and finalizing the vetoed bond election.

After Judge Keno Vasquez conducted the oath of office for the trustees’ new terms, Cerda expressed his dedication to the position.

“I love what I do in my regular job. But my part time job, which sometimes feels like a full time job, is this right here,” Cerda said, referring to being a trustee. “This is what I love…I’m not going anywhere.”

When asked if she had any thoughts before retaking her seat on the board, Sullivan kept it short.

“Let’s just get to work,” she said.

Sullivan begins her second term on the board, and Cerda begins his fourth nonconsecutive term.

REORGANIZATION

The school board members also voted to reorganize its officers following two years with the same lineup.

The new Sharyland ISD school board president is Hector Rivera, who served as president for the 2023-24 school year and vice president for the last two years.

Cerda, who was not an officer in his previous term, moved into the vice president position, while Andrew Riddle became secretary. Maritza Venecia stepped down from the presidential role she had held since 2024 and became assistant secretary. David Keith and Sullivan (formerly secretary and assistant secretary, respectively) remain trustees without officer positions.

Venecia voiced her gratitude to her fellow trustees for allowing her to serve as president for two consecutive years — an uncommon practice on the school board.

“It’s been a ride for sure, but it’s such a privilege to serve with these colleagues,” she said. “To work with the phenomenal leadership team that this district has, to be in the seat that I’ve been in the last two years and to really see the way things have turned, to see the forward momentum, to work alongside Dr. Howard and to learn from her, it’s been such a privilege.”

Superintendent Dr. Elaine Howard also expressed her appreciation for Venecia and the rest of the trustees.

“I don’t think people really know how much you or all of the trustees give,” Howard said. “And when I say give, I don’t use it lightly. You give of your time, you give of your wisdom. You give of your grace over to this district to serve endlessly.”

The board will vote to reorganize the officer positions again at the end of the 2026-27 school year.
