Huskies ground the Eagles 45-28
The Juarez-Lincoln Huskies jumped out to a 21-0 lead over the Mission Eagles, Thursday night at Sharyland ISD’s Richard Thompson Stadium, and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Eagles by a score of 45-28.
The Huskies opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game when junior quarterback Efren Martinez snuck the ball in from the 1-yard-line with 9:15 remaining in the first quarter. Juarez-Lincoln senior running back Eddie Hernandez made the score 14-0 Huskies when he ran the ball into the end zone from three yards out on the first play of the second quarter. That was followed by a Manuel Briseno recovery of a fumble, which he ran in for a touchdown, with 10:43 remaining in the second quarter to make the score 21-0 in favor of the Huskies.
The Eagles finally put points on the board when sophomore quarterback Damian Gomez and junior wide receiver Sebastian Gonzalez connected on a 62-yard pass play that set up the Eagles at the Huskies 1-yard-line. Mission sophomore running back Aleksander Gomez then ran the ball in from 1-yard out with 9:46 remaining in the second quarter to make the score 21-7 Juarez-Lincoln.
Just when it seemed as if the Eagles were going to make a game of it, Martinez and junior wide receiver Luis Rodriguez connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-7 Huskies with 4:27 remaining in the second quarter. Just two minutes later the Eagles closed the gap to 14 points once again when Mission signal caller Gomez found a wide open Steve Villarreal in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown pass. That would close the first half scoring with the Huskies ahead 28-14.
With 7:06 remaining in the third quarter, the Huskies’ Martinez and Rodriguez connected for their second touchdown pass of the night to make the score 35-14 Juarez-Lincoln. Not to be outdone, the Eagles’ Gomez and Gonzalez connected on their own touchdown pass, but this one was from 64-yards out, to make the score 35-20 Huskies with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter.
Then with eight minutes remaining in the game Juarez-Lincoln junior running back Albert Martinez made the score 42-20 in favor of the Huskies when he scored his first touchdown of the night from 15-yards out. After a Juarez-Lincoln field goal made the score 45-20 Huskies, the Eagles made the final score somewhat respectable when freshman running back Andrew Maldonado ran the ball into the end zone from five-yards out to close out the scoring at 45-28.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 2-1 in District 30-6A play and 4-2 overall while the Eagles drop to 1-2 in district play and 3-4 overall with the loss.
