La Joya school board proposing pay increases for employees

The La Joya ISD Board of Trustees proposed pay increases for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year
during a budget workshop Wednesday evening.

At the workshop, the following salary increases were proposed according to a press release from the district:

• 1-5 $3,250 increase
• 6-10 $3,650 increase
• 11-20 $4,050 increase
• 21+ $4,450 increase

All other employees would receive an increase of 6 percent from the midpoint.

“We are excited to announce pay increases across the board for all La Joya ISD employees. La Joya ISD
School Board of Trustees works together to support our teachers and staff to best meet the needs of our
students to maintain our tradition of educational excellence,” La Joya ISD School Board President,
Claudia Ochoa said in the release. “We are proud to have a generous compensation plan that will assist us in our vision of making La Joya ISD an ‘A’ rated school district.”

If approved, La Joya ISD employees should expect these pay increases in their September paychecks, the release stated.

“Our students and employees are our number one priority at La Joya ISD,” district Superintendent Gisela Saenz said. “I commend the work of our Board of Trustees and
administrative team to ensure our 4,300 plus employees receive a generous raise. The school board and
administrative team went above and beyond from what legislature required in terms of compensation.
We want our employees to know we appreciate and value them for their hard work and commitment to
this district. We understand that by having motivated employees our students will benefit significantly.”

As previously reported, the district voted to pay 100 percent of the insurance premium for all 4,300 district employees for the cost of the base plan despite an increase in insurance cost. Most districts charge a share of the premium to the employee, the release stated.
