Hidalgo County is confirming its first pediatric death due to COVID-19.
The death, according to a Friday news release, reports the child was one of the 20 people who died from complications from the disease.
Due to state and federal privacy laws, Hidalgo County Health Officials will not be releasing the child’s age or other personal or health information, according to a news release.
“The death of this child reaffirms that children — and no age group — are not immune from the devastating impact of this deadly virus,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said. “It is imperative for us to all work together to prevent further spread of this disease. This death hits home the reality that COVID-19 does not spare even the youngest members of our community
The county also reported 531 new positive cases of the disease, bringing the total number of positive cases to 21,806 with 5,003 of them marked as active..
There are currently 530 people hospitalized with complications from the virus; 223 of those cases are being treated in intensive care units.313 people were released from isolation on Friday after showing no symptoms 10 days, including three days without a fever.
Starr County reported 38 new cases of the disease, bringing the county total to 2,729 with 1,043 recoveries and 1,664 people recovering under medical care.
