Hidalgo County COVID-19 cases reach 40,000

Hidalgo County reached a grim milestone as county health officials reported 719 new positive cases of the disease on Friday, the third straight day of new cases reported totaling more than 600.

With the new cases, a total of 40,085 people have been infected with COVID-19, according to a county news release. 2,333 of those cases remain active.

Eight other county residents died from COVID-19 complications, making it a total of 2.030 people who have died from complications related to the disease.

According to the release, 167 county residents remain in area hospitals due to complications related to the disease. 63 of them are being treated in intensive care units.
