May 1 – The Pharr Community Theater will offer its second season of online screenwriting classes for beginning and advanced writers. Teen and adult classes will held via Zoom for four Saturdays in May, from May 1 to May 22. Adults will have class from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by the teens from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Robert Longoria of McAllen will be the instructor. Tuition is $60 per student for the first 10 to register. May 3 – The next RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Manic Monday Mixer will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hacienda San Miguel, 6101 N. 23rd St., Ste. D, in McAllen. May 4 – The International Museum of Art & Science Homeschool Days: Oceanography begins at 2 p.m. for 3rd to 5th graders to experiment with matter in different forms and learn about women scientists from the past and present. An activity kit is provided. Registrants will be emailed a pickup confirmation, a digital copy of the lesson, and the webinar link. Cost is $6 for IMAS members and $10 for general registration. May 7 – The Valley Symphony Orchestra (VSO) annual gala, “Bravo! VSO,” will be held at the McAllen Performing Arts Center with an opening reception at 6 p.m., and dinner and entertainment by the VSO string orchestra at 7:30 p.m. A gourmet white glove service meal, silent auction and more, rounds out the event. Single tickets are $175 per person. Sponsorship levels are $1,500 for Silver, tickets for four people, partial table; $2,500, Gold, full table; and $5,000, Platinum, full table. Tables and tickets are on sale at valleyorchestra.org or by calling the VSO office at 956-661-1615 anytime 12 to 5 p.m., weekdays. Seating is limited and COVID guidelines will be followed throughout the event.

June 9 – The RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presents the 7th Annual Women of Distinction Awards at the Mission Event Center, 2425 Ruby Red Blvd., from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will begin with a cocktail hour followed by the dinner and awards presentations. Tickets are $50 per person, $15 for webinar tickets, and $400 for a reserved table for six. For sponsorship and ticket information, call 956-928-0060.

August 28 – The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) will host the 42nd Collage Annual Gala at the McAllen Convention Center Ballroom. The IMAS will be honoring the City of McAllen for its steadfast support of the museum and its mission for 54 years. October 22-24 – The RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will host First Annual RGV Jalapeño Amateur Championship. The three-day event will have a practice round on Friday with formal play on Saturday and Sunday. Spots are open for 150 golfers to sign up and participate. Maximum handicap allowed is 24, and the format is two-player team Florida Scramble. The handicap index differential between the two players may not exceed 10. The USGA Handicap System will be used.
