Motorist dead, deputy constable injured after head-on crash in Palmview

A man died and a deputy constable was injured Saturday morning after a head-on crash in Palmview.

The driver of a Dodge Charger was involved in a collision near the intersection of Schuerbach Road and 3 Mile Line between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday, according to Precinct 3 Constable Larry Gallardo. After the collision, the driver fled south on Schuerbach Road.

Schuerbach Road becomes Breyfogle Road south of Mile 2 Road.

Minutes later, a Dodge Charger sped through the intersection of Breyfogle Road and Veterans Boulevard in Palmview.

That Dodge Charger crossed the center line and struck a Hidalgo County Precinct 3 deputy constable’s vehicle head-on.

Gallardo said the Dodge Charger involved in the crash at Schuerbach and 3 Mile Line matched the description of the Dodge Charger that hit the deputy constable head-on.

All details, however, remain preliminary, Gallardo said, and the Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting the Palmview Police Department with the investigation.

The driver of the Dodge Charger died at the scene. The deputy constable was alert and speaking when other law enforcement officers arrived.

The deputy constable was transported to McAllen Medical Center, Gallardo said.
