May 28– Geared for all ages, the aquatic science program “What’s in this Water?” at Bentsen-RGV State Park demonstrates the chemical and biological components of the water. It begins at 1:30 p.m. Reservations are required. Programs are free with park admission. Meet at the tram turnaround at park headquarters. May 30 – The City of McAllen and the Veterans War Memorial committee will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Texas Veterans War Memorial, 3129 Galveston Ave. The event begins at 10 a.m.
June 1 – The next IMAS Museum from Home workshop takes a look at art history. Youth participate through a live Zoom webinar hosted by an IMAS educator to lead them through a hands-on lesson. Supplies are included in an activity kit to be picked up via curbside on the Saturday prior to the workshop. Cost is $6 for IMAS members and $12 for others. Sessions are at 2 p.m. for 3rd through 5th grades and 3:30 p.m. for 6th through 12th. For more information, call 956-681-2800. IMAS is at 1900 Nolana Ave., McAllen.
June 5– Orchid grower Phillip Hamilton will be the guest speaker at the next Tip of Texas Orchid Society meeting at 2 p.m. at the Valley Nature Center, 301 S. Border in Weslaco. Hamilton, owner of Bredren Orchids in Florida, was born and raised in Jamaica where he inherited his father Claude’s passion for orchids and grew up working in his parents’ orchid nursery, Hamlyn Orchids. He has been growing and hybridizing since the age of eight. Admission is $5 for non-members and free for members of TOTOS. For those who wish to become a member, the yearly membership fee is only $25.
June 6– The next Manic Monday Mixer hosted by the RGV Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Smokin’ Moon BBQ, 617 W. Polk Ave., Pharr. Business owners who bring a door prize will have an opportunity to talk about their business. Call 956-928-0060 for more information.
