June 8– The International Museum of Art & Science and McAllen Public Utility are hosting a teen science workshop, Crab Dissection, from 2 to 4 p.m. Participants will be guided through a hands-on dissection of a blue crab as they learn about the anatomy and the adaptations of these pinching crustaceans and their importance to the ecosystem. June 17 – This is the dealine to apply for the Edinburg Teen Police Academy, a week-long program to learn about police functions through hands-on activities. Classes are held at the CPL Derek Hernandez Police Training Facility, 1309 N. Doolittle Rd. It is free of charge and open to Edinburg high school students – public, private, or homeschooled – entering the 10th thru 12th grades for the 2024-25 school year. Two sessions are offered: June 24 to June 28 or July 8 to 12. June 17-20 – Region One Education Service Center is hosting its Annual Youth Empowerment Summit for 7th grade (incoming 8th grade) students in special populations at the Edinburg Scenic Wetlands and World Birding Center, 714 S. Raul Longoria Rd., Edinburg. Special populations include dyslexia, emergent bilingual English learners, gifted and talented, highly mobile and at-risk students in migrant populations and foster care, and special education. The gifted and talented student learning experience is June 17 and 18. All other students will participate June 19 and 20. Sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. June 17-21– During this Operation Imagination camp at the International Museum of Art & Science, “Jr. Geologists,” 4th-8th graders will learn about the science of geology. The “Textile Crafters,” camp for 4th-8th graders takes a closer look at the IMAS collection of textiles where they will make simple works of art through sewing, embroidery, and fabric design. This camp will be Monday-Tuesday, closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, and resumes Thursday-Friday. This camp has a reduced rate of $150 and $120 for IMAS members. June 17-21 – Camp Invention®, a nonprofit summer enrichment program, is coming to St. Paul Lutheran School, 300 E. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame® in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in grades Kinder to 6th to use their creativity to solve problems.
