Mission CISD reorganizes administration, eliminates deputy superintendent posts
The Mission CISD Board voted Wednesday to demote two of the district’s top two administrators and reorganize the district’s upper level administrative structure.
Previously, Deputy Superintendent for Business and Support Services Joel Garcia and Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Sharon Roberts held the second highest positions in the district.
On Wednesday, the board voted to eliminate those positions and the pay grade they fell under — the highest in the district.
“I’m disappointed, but I’m OK,” Garcia said.
The board also voted to reinstate three dormant assistant superintendent posts: one for human resources, one for business and finance, and one for curriculum and finance.
“I’ve had the opportunity to evaluate the needs of the district during my first 90 days in the position of superintendent. It is in the best interest of the district to reorganize cabinet-level positions by eliminating the deputy superintendent tier to assistant superintendent to more effectively and efficiently lead and manage various district departments,” Superintendent Cris Valdez said via text. “These changes are not based on anyone’s performance. My goal is to restructure my cabinet that more effectively addresses the needs of the district, in a way that more traditionally reflects prior practices of the district.”
The district also added an executive director position for curriculum and instruction and a similar position for director of technology.
It’s not clear which, if any, of those positions Garcia and Roberts may occupy.
Broadly, Mission’s changes make it more similar to other Rio Grande Valley districts, which operate with a handful of cabinet-level administrators directly reporting to their superintendents.
Mission trustees discussed the shakeup behind closed doors in executive session, but voted on it unanimously in public without discussion.
The board talked about those positions under the auspices of discussing the district’s administrative professional salary schedule, though it approved no new salaries for administrators.

Everyone is going to learn to cut, perhaps this will help us senior citizens who are still helping pay the school expenses!! Ours went up $300 this year! I taught in the school system and know there is a lot of money wasted and its easier to cut the upper level as they have been receiving a percentage raise on a much greater amount!
