The District Baseball Season Heats Up in the Big 7

The district baseball season is shaping up to be an exciting one in the Big 7. Many teams are emerging as contenders, while others are facing challenges. For the Palmview Lobos and Veterans Memorial Patriots in District 30-5A, along with the Pioneer Diamondbacks and Sharyland Rattlers in District 31-5A, key matchups against each other provide opportunities to influence the playoff picture.

District 30-5A: The Fight for First

The Lobos sit atop their district with an undefeated 8-0 record. As the season unfolds, several key players continue to stand out and contribute significantly to the team’s performance. Senior Mateo Garcia is proving to be the most dominant hitter, boasting an impressive .490 batting average over 16 games. Garcia is a crucial asset at the plate, recording 25 hits, 14 RBIs, and nine doubles, making him one of the team’s most reliable offensive threats. Freshman Javier Garza is also making a name for himself, maintaining a .364 batting average in 15 games. Garza’s 12 hits and 11 RBIs demonstrate his ability to perform under pressure, proving that despite being one of the youngest players on the roster, he can contribute at a high level. Senior Adrian Garza is another key contributor, posting a .368 batting average over eight games. While playing in fewer contests, his efficiency at the plate is evident with seven hits, six RBIs, and a home run.

The Lobos are closely trailed by the Veterans Memorial Patriots, who hold second place in the district with an 8-1 record. On Tuesday, April 1st, and Friday, April 4th, these two teams face off in a crucial district series that could determine the district champions. Progress Times spoke to Lobos head coach Manuel “Ricky” Garcia about his team’s upcoming matchup, “We’ll prepare for this like every other team we play. Every team we play, I tell the kids, it’s a playoff game every single game… We can’t slack off, we can’t make errors against good teams. Mission Vets is a good, very solid team. We’ve been watching them. They played pretty good and like I told the guys, ‘We’re as good as them and they’re as good as us. We just gotta play baseball, Lobos baseball, and be able to make sure we eliminate the errors and if we do that, we’ll be okay.”

Like Coach Garcia mentions, the Patriots are proving to be a solid team all season long. The second-place 7-1 record isn’t due to luck but rather skill and preparation. Several standout players continue to deliver exceptional performances at the plate. Senior Jahziel Trevino is emerging as the top hitter, boasting an outstanding .545 batting average over 14 games. Trevino is a key force in the lineup, recording 24 hits, 20 RBIs, and five doubles, while also scoring 18 runs. His ability to consistently drive in runs and get on base makes him a crucial asset to the team’s offensive success. Junior Jorge De Leon follows closely behind, batting an impressive .467 average across 14 games. De Leon tallies 14 hits, seven RBIs, and five doubles, demonstrating his efficiency at the plate. His ability to make solid contact and advance runners makes him a reliable contributor. Senior Jeremiah Vela is also making a significant impact, posting a .462 batting average in 14 games. With 18 hits, 14 RBIs, and two home runs, Vela proves to be a versatile hitter, delivering power and consistency. His offensive presence is felt throughout the season as he plays a vital role in driving in key runs for the team. The Patriots have a tough task ahead of them on Tuesday and again on Friday against the Lobos, but if they want to claim a district championship this season, they need to overcome the challenge that is this Lobos team.

District 31-5A: Snakeskin Classic

The season wouldn’t be complete without a rivalry matchup between the Sharyland Rattlers and the Pioneer Diamondbacks. The Rattlers currently hold fourth place in their district, clinging to the final seed for a playoff berth with a 5-2 record. With only a few games left in the district season, the Rattlers’ playoff hopes could very well hang in the balance of their upcoming series against the Pioneer Diamondbacks on Tuesday, April 1st, and Friday, April 4th.

As the season progresses, several players for the Rattlers continue to step up and deliver strong performances. Among them, sophomore Edgar Quintanilla leads the charge with a remarkable .426 batting average over 19 games. Quintanilla tallies 20 hits, 15 RBIs, and four doubles, proving to be a reliable and consistent hitter. Senior Fabrizio Salinas is also making a significant impact, batting an impressive .396 average. Over 19 games, Salinas records 21 hits, 11 RBIs, and five doubles, showcasing his ability to deliver in crucial moments. Sophomore Luis Balderas is posting a .353 batting average in 19 games. With 18 hits, 11 RBIs, and two triples, Balderas displays a mix of contact hitting and extra-base power. These three standout players continue to play a crucial role in the team’s overall success, consistently delivering at the plate and setting the standard for their teammates.

The Rattlers have a tough challenge ahead as the Diamondbacks sit just above them in the standings with a 6-3 record. Leading the team, senior Ruben Lopez is batting a solid .292 average over 17 games. Lopez records 14 hits, 13 RBIs, and a home run, proving to be a dependable hitter and run producer in key moments. Senior Diego Dominguez is also making a notable impact, batting at a .200 average. Dominguez contributes eight hits, four RBIs, and three doubles, showing his ability to come through with extra-base hits when needed. Junior Leland Villarreal is another standout, posting a .320 batting average in 15 games. With eight hits, four RBIs, and a triple, Villarreal demonstrates efficiency at the plate and the ability to get on base when needed.

Progress Times asked Diamondbacks head coach Adrian Leal about his thoughts on the season up to this point, “The team has had a successful season so far. We’ve been able to compete against top-tier talent from across the state in the two tournaments that we played which has prepared us for our tough district schedule. Our goals for this year has been to focus on our performance as a team in practices and games and not always with our results. We have used this to focus on ourselves while blocking out external distractions that naturally come up throughout the season. We feel really good about heading into the last half of our district season and a big part of that confidence is based on the leadership of our two senior captains, Ruben Lopez and Diego Dominguez. Both of these players are mature individuals with an intense passion for the game and are team-driven. We are very lucky to have them on our side and we go as they go.”

As the season reaches its final stretch, the battles in District 30-5A and District 31-5A continue to be intense, with each game carrying significant playoff implications. The upcoming matchups will be key in determining which teams emerge as district champions and who secures their spot in the postseason.
