Edinburg CISD superintendent may be suspended, police chief on leave

Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees may suspend Superintendent Mario Salinas at next week’s meeting on Wednesday.

According to a board agenda posted Friday afternoon, trustees will discuss a possible reprimand and disciplinary action for Salinas “up to and including” his suspension.

Salinas didn’t immediately return requests for comment, nor did Board President David Torres.

A longtime district employee, trustees named Salinas superintendent in 2021.

His possible suspension follows the district placing ECISD Police Chief Ricardo Perez Jr. on administrative leave this week.

According to Perez, he was placed on leave Wednesday.

Perez said he wasn’t sure why he’s been placed on leave and directed questions about it to the school district.

“I think those questions you would have to ask the school district administration,” he said.

Salinas didn’t return calls or texts about Perez.

Last week officers arrested 18-year-old Edinburg North High School Student Kinzey Lira after he allegedly brought a pistol and a loaded magazine to campus.

In a release, the school district noted that the pistol wasn’t loaded – but didn’t bring up the magazine.

The school board was set to hold a safety and security committee meeting Thursday to discuss that incident.

The meeting, however, was canceled.

Last year South Texas Health System recognized Perez as a “Hometown Hero.”

“On the professional level, I don’t believe we have an employee who is more dedicated to what he does,” Superintendent Salinas said at the time. “He’s dedicated to his job, he’s dedicated to our employees, he’s dedicated to our students. He is one of the most committed employees that we have in our system.”

Find out what’s at the bottom of the incident. Sounds like someone on campus dropped the ball. Positive action is suggested.

Please give him another chance ! He could never be replaced. I think the board should overlook small petty things.

You think a school that doesn’t protect their staff and students from gun violence is considered a small and petty offense? Anyone is replaceable, everyone should be held accountable for their actions especially when it involves minors.

I find it stupid that the police lie about the guns they find on campus say they are not loaded. Same crap with the BMS incident. As if that is supposed to make things better. So stupid. Til this day the incompetent Chief has yet to reply to my emails. That tool bag is just there for the health insurance cuz he needs it. Just go away already.

I think someone out of the box needs to investigate. I hear good things about Mr. Perez, and not so good things about Mr. Salinas. It’s time to clean house!!

Suspended? How about fired, then tarred and feathered?
