New mayor, councilman elected in Sullivan City runoff
Sullivan City voters elected a new mayor and a new councilman in the municipality’s June 7 runoff.
Challenger Sylvia Castillo beat incumbent Alma Salinas in the race for mayor, raking in 53.13% of the vote to Salinas’ 46.87%.

Isaac Sulemana, meanwhile, outran Elias Morales Jr. in the race for undefended Place 3, pulling in 53.41% of ballots to Morales’ 46.59%.

Finally, Rene “Cuate” Peña successfully defended his Place 3 seat on council.

Peña won his race by the narrowest margin of the election, 51.63% of the vote to opponent Javier “Jain” Flores’ 48.37%.
The runoff marked the end of a campaign season in Sullivan City that has lasted half a year, and returns represent mixed results for the two factions that squared off in the election.
The “We Are Sullivan” slate saw just one of its candidates — Sulemana — elected to council.
The “El Futuro de Sullivan” slate managed to successfully reelect Peña and oust Salinas from the mayor’s position.
The runoff was prompted by a three-slate race in May in which no faction secured a majority of the vote.
After that election, candidates with “La Voz Del Pueblo,” who all finished last in their races, through their support behind Futuro candidates.
