Mission taps temporary attorney

The Mission City Council Tuesday voted 4-1 to award legal services to Jones, Galligan, Key and Lozano for a three-month period.

Robert “Bob” Galligan has long represented the city in one form or another.

“They’re very knowledgeable, they’re very experienced in all levels,” Co-Interim City Manager J.P. Terrazas said.

According to Terrazas, Galligan’s firm currently provides legal services to the city’s tax increment reinvestment zone and its economic development corporation.

“Mr. Galligan has been with us for as long as I can remember, even before my time. He’s not new to this, he’s not new to our community,” Terrazas said.

Current City Attorney Patricia Rigney initially announced her resignation in December but gradually extended it through Friday, Feb. 27.

Council heard legal services presentations from six firms and attorneys earlier this month.

Traditionally, Mission hires an in-house attorney, though council considered alternative options this time.

Galligan has previously stepped in as an interim between in-house attorneys and Terrazas said he anticipated him playing a similar role this time.

“The sentiment is to go and look for an in-house city attorney,” he said.

According to Terrazas, Galligan’s fees hadn’t been established as of Wednesday.
