La Joya City Council to negotiate with PossAble Dream Foundation

In a July 14 La Joya City Council meeting, the city gave approval for the city manager to negotiate a commercial lease agreement with the PossAble Dream Foundation.
The item, which the city discussed in executive session and later revealed in open session, concerns a commercial lease negotiation with the non-profit organization.
A non-profit organization, the PossAble Dream foundation operates charter schools for adults in Pharr and in Mission, and a negotiation with La Joya signals an intent to open a school in the area.
Darcia Cuellar, Superintendent of the PossAble Dream Adult High School, spoke to the La Joya City Council and said that the school serves a variety of students, from those who never went to high school to those who are an exam or a couple of credits away from graduation.
“It’s a wide expanse of people that we can serve,” Cuellar said. “You will definitely see and read the benefits of how this changes lives and not only of the lives of the students that we serve, but also their children and their children’s children.”
According to research from the PossAble Dream Foundation conducted in La Joya and surrounding areas, there are over 30,000 adults between the ages of 25 and 50 that do not have “educational attainment.”
Cuellar said that while providing education to all 30,000 in the research would be an ideal goal, “if we could hit 299 a year we could start chipping away at that.”
Other items that were approved for negotiation at this meeting are a lease agreement with the city with Weslaco-based Wastewater Rental & Equipment Services LLC.
La Joya’s city meetings are scheduled the second Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will occur on August 11 starting at 6 p.m
