Hidalgo County announces 26 new COVID-19 cases, free testing

The total amount of known COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County rose to 759 after the county reported 26 new cases in a Monday news release.

The 26 new cases included a county employee who works with the Health and Human Services Department. The employee was on leave when they tested positive and they never had contact with the public when they became infected, the county stated.

More than 23,000 tests have been administered in Hidalgo County with 1,758 pending pending and a total of 324 active cases, the county announced.

County Judge Richard F. Cortez again attributed the increase in new cases to a rise in testing.

“But that’s only part of the equation. People need to know that they can still be infected if they don’t follow safety guidelines like avoiding crowds and practicing good hygiene,” Cortez added.

The state of Texas is offering testing in several locations this week for free that do not require an appointment or pre-registration.

The following locations will offer free testing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day:

Starr County also announced free COVID-19 testing that is open to all set for Wednesday, June 10 at the Escobares Community Center and at the Roma Community Center Tuesday, June 9 and Thursday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Like the Hidalgo County testing locations, no appointment is needed. People coming in however are asked t bring an ID.

Starr County reported 12 new cases over the weekend on Mondya morning, bringing the total number of known cases to 60 with 32 of them as active cases.
