The counties of Starr and Hidalgo reported a combined 206 new COVID-19 cases with Hidalgo County reporting an additional 16 deaths from the disease.
161 of those new cases came from Hidalgo County bringing the total number of people who have knowingly contracted the disease in Hidalgo County to 28,893 with 2,140 of those cases marked as active.
The COVID-19 death toll in Hidalgo County, meanwhile, now stands at 1,311.
“These numbers continue to grow, suggesting the virus remains dangerously active in our region. Today we mourn the tragic loss of 16 more of our friends, families and neighbors,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said. “We must continue to take the precautionary steps to protect the health of our Hidalgo County neighbors by wearing a mask, social distancing, and cleaning and sanitizing our household settings. Let’s save lives and stop this threat together.”
257 people remain in area hospitals with COVID-19 related complications with 99 of them being treated in intensive care units.
In Starr County, meanwhile, 45 new cases were reported over a four day period from September 4 through September 7.
The county reports there are 610 active cases of the disease and 141 COVID-19 related deaths. 2,736 people have recovered.
